Tom Karos has participated in the Central East Regional both as an individual and on a team. In 2013, Karos finished in 26th place in the Central East Regional – an amazing feat that puts him in the 99th percentiles of athletes in our power house region. He also finished 26th in the Granite Games in 2014 and has participated in Hyperfit’s Winter Camp. Most recently, in 2017, Karos, Fairhurst, and Berger finished FIRST in The Granite Games in Minnesota beating out hundreds of teams to achieve the top of the podium.
Karos programmed for Advanced Performance CrossFit for over three years learning from Coach Doug Chapman at Hyperfit and gleaning from other top programmers. Karos has been mentored by Coach Chapman as an athlete and has coached WODs and Olympic Lifting Specialty classes for the past 3 years.
In addition, Karos cares for everyone’s fitness progress and is extremely personable. He served as the Director of Programming for Advanced Performance CrossFit programming WODs and organizing several large competitions with great success such as APCs WOD WARS.
“CrossFit,” states Karos, has given me a sense of community, a way to help others, a platform for athletic performance and a fun way to challenge myself.” He is excited to be sharing his expertise in his own box, CrossFit HighGear.

Heidi Bogue has been involved with CrossFit since 2010 when she fell in love with the sport after her first power clean. She found CrossFit based on the recommendation of two good friends who suggested she give it a try. After having six children in eight years, she was looking for a way to get back into shape and lose some pounds. CrossFit delivered on its promise and in just a few months allowed her to drop from a size 10 to a size 2 and be in the best shape of her life.
Her passion for the Sport of Fitness has continued as she has found she also enjoys competing. Bogue has competed in the CrossFit Masters Qualifier 3 years by placing in the top 100 of over 16,000 athletes worldwide. Most recently, in 2017, Heidi placed 1st in the Central East Region in the CrossFit Open in her age division ranking in the top 99.9 percentile in the region and top 99.8 percentile worldwide. Also in 2017, Bogue finished 3rd in The Granite Games in the Open Masters 45-49 Division. In 2014, Bogue, Coach Tom Karos, and Coach Anna Jones also competed in the Central East Regional Competition as a Team. In addition to her athletic endeavors, she is experienced in project development and growth, business ownership, marketing, management, event planning as well as coaching. She has organized and managed large competitions such as Chalk It Up, Cupid’s Revenge, and The Buckeye Games which host over 300 athletes.
She has been an athlete for most of her life focusing primarily on judo in Brazil, where she grew up. Five years after college graduation and marrying Jeff Bogue, the couple began a beautiful family of six – Josiah, Isaac, Micah, Gabriel, Naomi and Eli. When “baby” Eli was four years old, Heidi began CrossFit in an attempt to reclaim her body and achieve a better level of fitness. “CrossFit,” shares Bogue, “has been essential in restoring my strength and stamina after having 6 babies in 8 years. When cardio and low calorie diets failed me, CrossFit was definitely the answer to taking me from a size 10 to a size 2. But, as with most CrossFitters, I found so much more.”
“Through my struggles with grief after the loss of my mother to melanoma cancer, I discovered a strong connection between my physical output and my ability to connect with my faith and emotions. CrossFit allowed me to journey through my grief and prepared me to run two marathons on behalf of my mom – raising funds for Jack’s Fund on behalf of the Melanoma Foundation. I found that the physical results were the initial reward but now my passion for people and helping them with their own transformations fuels me. In addition, CrossFit has given me lifelong friends and a purpose much higher than setting PRs.” Coach Heidi Bogue is eager to continue to give back to the community that has given her so much.
Coach AJ is passionate about what he does and it shows! He is a blast to have as a coach and has a contagious enthusiasm and energy. He also has a way of making anyone laugh even in the middle of a grueling movement. Among his many talents, Coach AJ is a skilled gymnast who can front flip, back tuck and walk forever on his hands. Occasionally you might spot him swinging on our monkey bars and trying some brave maneuvers at the gym.
AJ has been involved with CrossFit since 2014 and has been coaching since 2015. He is an excellent motivator and loves helping others reach their next level of fitness.
CFHG is very fortunate to have Coach AJ on our team. We love the skills he brings to the table and he certainly knows how to keep things fun and entertaining! Be sure to check out his class!

Anna Jones discovered CrossFit in 2012 after graduating from Mount Union. As an All-American discus thrower, Jones enjoyed the challenge of personal improvements and found that CrossFit offered plenty of those opportunities. She “crossfitted” in her garage at home using a plastic jump rope, a weight set that only went up to 75 lbs, a 35 lb dumbbell, and a makeshift pull up bar. Jones qualified for the Central East Regionals as a team member and loves the community aspect of CrossFit.
In addition, Jones has always had a love of food. Growing up the enjoyed watching the Cooking Channel and in college took several classes related to Sports Nutrition. She learned about the effects of food within the body, how different metabolic cycles occur, and studied “power foods”, antioxidants, supplements, different protein sources, veganism, vegetarianism, pescetarianism, raw foods diet, organic nutrition and much more.
If you’ve ever shared a meal with her, you know her passion for food is contagious, “After years of studying and researching foods, cooking, creating new healthy recipes, trying different diets (I’ve been vegetarian, pescatarian, and omnivorous) I feel like I have a very hollistic and comprehensive view of nutrition. Being a Nutrition Coach for HighGear is a very natural progression of my knowledge and passion for food and athletics. My goal is to teach everyone a general understanding of foods and how they are digested and utilized by the body so that they can make conscious and wise decisions about what they eat. The body needs to consume fat, carbohydrates, and protein, with minerals and vitamins for everything to work correctly. I have no intention of restricting anyone of food, rather enabling our clients to make wiser choices that will benefit their bodies and make them healthier, stronger, and more able in their everyday lives.”

Ashley Dennerlein became interested in fitness and athletics at a young age. At age 3 she began dancing. She kept up with it for 8 years. During that time her mother introduced her to basketball, soccer, and softball. Ashley played all three starting at age 6 and while in high school she decided to focus on soccer. That decision helped her receive a scholarship to play soccer at Malone University. She played for four years and received a 2nd Team All American award as well as being captain during her senior year. While being a captain, Ashley discovered her love of leadership and coaching her teammates. After graduation Ashley continued to coach at Malone University for two years. Following that Ashley coached for high school teams such as CVCA, Heartland Christian School, and now Hoover High School. Ashley’s love for coaching all ages inspired her to get her Level 1 Crossfit and Crossfit Kids certifications.
Ashley found Crossfit in 2012. After graduating and no longer having a team to train with, she became bored with running on her own and doing workouts that only applied to soccer. Her aunt, Heidi Bogue, convinced her to try Crossfit. Ashley followed Heidi (on her bike at 5 am) to her first Crossfit workout and has been hooked every since. The team aspect and community is what drew her to Crossfit and kept her coming back. She has competed in a few competitions, receiving first place at the “Grace Race” fitness competition with her team. Ashley has coached adults and teens at Speed Shop Crossfit in Canfield, Ohio and has experience training various sports teams at multiple high schools over the past three years.
Ashley currently teaches Health and Physical Education at North Canton Hoover High School and is a welcome addition to the coaching team at CrossFit HighGear to assist Coach Jamie with the Kids & Teens program.

Dr. Aubree Jones is a native of Chautauqua County, New York. She graduated from Falconer Central school in 2008 and continued her studies at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio earning her Bachelors of Science in Exercise Physiology in 2012. Dr. Aubree then went on to earn her Doctorate in Chiropractic from New York Chiropractic College in 2016.
Dr. Aubree was an avid athlete in high school, and college and was a highly accomplished discus thrower. She has been involved in CrossFit for over 4 years and has a passion to help others get fit and healthy regardless of their current physical fitness. As a chiropractor, her mission is to help her patients become healthier through elimination of their pain, promoting a healthful diet, and helping them lead physically active lives.
As a coach, Jones brings out the best in her athletes. Her classes are fun and engaging and she always has an encouraging word for everyone during a WOD. CrossFit HighGear is bless to have Dr. Aubree Jones on our team!
Becca Tighe began teaching yoga in 2009 after training with Baron Baptiste in Catskills, NY. For many years Hot Vinyasa Flow Yoga was her primary fitness, while trying other things like boot-camp programs and Spinning. She took her first CrossFit class in 2012 and fell in love. Quickly she was hooked on the ever changing challenges of the sport. She also began to realize just how important yoga is for CrossFitters. Yoga works on flexibility, range of motion, breath and alignment, all of which are key elements of CrossFit.
As a CrossFitter herself, she understands how yoga can specifically help movements in the gym. She can relate to the weaknesses that need attention to improve specific skills. It can be difficult to to squat, do handstand pushups, kettle bell swings, etc. if your hips, shoulders or ankles don’t have enough flexibility. Tighe is very excited to bring awareness to the mobility side of Crossfit HighGear! She believes “if you CrossFit, you need yoga”!

Brian LaVoie began CrossFit four years ago after being invited to a class. Hesitant at first, but willing, he completed his first WOD. He was so sore that he didn’t return for a week. He knew that he had found something. “I knew this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
Being challenged and accomplishing things are what keeps LaVoie coming back. He is passionate about teaching proper technique and helping others overcome their own challenges. His story began on a green band for pull ups. Since then, CrossFit has helped him lose over twenty five pounds and he is in better shape now than he was ten years ago. LaVoie says “I wish I had CrossFit ten years ago… I’m going to do this as long as I can.”

Chance Wilging has been an athlete his entire life. He started on the soccer field at five years old and continued to play through high school on a state bound team with Chippewa High School.
After high school Wilging was introduced to CrossFit and fell in love with the gymnastic skills involved which came naturally to him! Wilging can often be found at the box stringing together as many muscle-ups as possible!
Although Wilging enjoys practicing gymnastics skills, he believes that practicing all other CrossFit movements (involving pushing, pulling, rowing, running, etc.) have helped him become a better athlete overall. After his first competition the excitement lit a fire that continues to fuel his training. He recommends that athletes of all levels compete for the fun of it and to experience a WOD with teammates.
He also encourages athletes to set goals with a specific deadline in order to push themselves to their fullest potential – and as a coach he enjoys helping people reach those goals!

Coach Chris Brown was first introduced to CrossFit approximately three years ago. He had heard of it for some time before that but never actually participated in it. Chris found it to be extremely encouraging. Not because of the strength and speed gains he experienced but from primarily, the community. Chris believes it is here where you become your strongest – where you come along like minded individuals and struggle together and encourage together.
His fitness background has varied over the years from general fitness to swimming and martial arts. He believes that CrossFit enables him to work around and with all different disciplines and it prolongs his ability to live life in a way where his physical limitations are reduced to a minimum. His intention at CrossFit HighGear is to help those who want to become stronger and faster versions of themselves and he is extremely happy to be part of the team.

If you sign up for our GearUp Beginner’s Program, Coach Chris Maag will be one of the first coaches you will meet. And, no doubt, you will love him! He is excited about working with newbies and is very skilled in teaching the foundational movements which are essential in CrossFit training. His non-threatening, easy going approach makes all of his athletes in his class feel at ease. Coach Chris is very patient and knowledgeable and desires for every athlete to improve.
He has been involved in CrossFit since 2013 and has been coaching since 2015. Chris and his wife, Brittany, love our community and even though they have had many travel opportunities with their careers, they have chosen to call the Greater Akron area home. Chris leads a busy life working for our area hospitals as a surgical assistant but still finds time to make CrossFit a priority in his life.
“I coach at HG for the opportunity to fulfill a passion of mine, the humility of giving back to the community, and the humbling experience seeing someone overcome a fear or a hurdle once thought impossible. Being the GearUp coach, I find it so rewarding to work with the newest athletes, (0-3 months of experience) preparing you for your fitness journey, and making your experience at Crossfit HighGear safe and worthwhile! Safety, efficiency and self-awareness are the three principles I try to instill in my athletes; the strength, stamina and endurance will come…I promise!”
We are certainly very blessed to have Coach Chris Maag at our box and feel very fortunate to have him on our team!
Dria grew up in Louisville where she played volleyball, cheered, and ran track. She is currently attending Malone University where she is majoring in Exercise Science.
Coach Dria overcame two ACL injuries that took her out of pursuing college sports yet she chose to not let these injuries dictate her athlete career. Dria worked hard to overcome them, but not through college sports as she always imagined. Instead, she found CrossFit which has become the perfect outlet for her competitive and athletic nature. After working to recover and coming back better than she was before, Dria aims to be an inspiration for athletes who are going through injury or adversity.
Most recently, Dria starred on Steve Austin’s Broken Skull challenge on CMT as an elite female competitor. Dria was initially chosen out of hundreds of applicants in the nation for the show because of her elite level of fitness and high level Crossfit background.
Dria thoroughly enjoys helping others and giving them tips on how they can improve their fitness and overall health. She is a “beastly sweetheart” and we are very blessed to have her as part of our team.
Grant recently graduated from Baldwin Wallace University in 2014 where he played basketball. It was there where his assistant coach, Tom Heil, introduced Grant to CrossFit as a means for improving his skills and athletic ability. Grant quickly saw results that improved his performance not only on the floor but also in his overall fitness and has been hooked ever since.
After college, Grant found himself looking for something that challenged him the way sports did to get better everyday, and CrossFit has been that outlet. When asked, Grant says that CrossFit is great for every level of athlete, and that it’s unique in the fact that CrossFit is adaptable to everyone. It meets the athlete where they are, and challenges them in their own ways. CrossFit helps everyone achieve goals they never thought could be reached.
Most recently, in 2017, Karos, Fairhurst, and Berger finished FIRST in The Granite Games in Minnesota beating out hundreds of teams to achieve the top of the podium. Grant is extremely excited to share his passion and energy with Crossfit HighGear and cannot wait to get better everyday as a coach, athlete, and most importantly a friend.

Coach Jamie tried CrossFit in 2012, following the birth of her youngest child. While she enjoyed the challenges each WOD presented, it was the community that kept her returning for more. It was a natural progression for Jamie to pursue her Crossfit Level 1 certification having coached swimming since 2001. “It’s so exciting to help someone learn a lift or skill or refine a movement and watch how they grow.”
As the mother to three young children, Jamie was fortunate to have the opportunity to teach children how to CrossFit. “Kids crossfit is a different type of sport. It teaches children so much more than physical strengths and skills.” Young or old, big or small, Coach Jamie enjoys working with individuals to reach goals or dreams they never thought possible!

Jordan began CrossFit in 2013 in New York as a way to get into shape to be able to trek into remote villages of Nepal, India, China, Morocco, and beyond. He says, “I was supposed to lead teams of about 10 different people on hikes that were up to 12 miles a day through the mountains. I knew that I had to be in excellent shape to be able to do that.” The first workout he ever did was “Randy”, which is 75 power snatches for time. Jordan says, “It felt like it lasted forever. It was probably more like 10 minutes in reality. I kind of figured that anything that hurt that bad in that amount of time had to be good for me on some level. I’ve been hooked ever since.”
After training consistently for a few months he decided he wanted to begin training others. He has always had a passion for helping people, and being able to coach seemed like a great way to do that. “I love the competitiveness that it brings out in athletes of all levels. It makes them realize very quickly that they can do way more than they ever thought was possible. I’ve actually been able to get almost my whole family involved in CrossFit too. They all love it. It’s really cool to see them all fall in love with it,” says Jordan.
Coach Jim has been married to his high school sweetheart, Becca, since 2000. He bravely serves our community as a Medina Police Officer. Together, Jim and Becca have two amazing kids, Lydia and Spencer, who make staying healthy an absolute must!
About his CrossFit pursuit, Jim states, “I started CrossFit in 2014 and pretty quickly “drank the Kool-Aid.” When CrossFit HighGear was going to open and we met in an empty building to hear Tom and Heidi’s vision it was a no brainer. We joined and about a year later I had a desire to coach. I got my L1 certification in January 2017 and have been coaching our members ever since. I absolutely LOVE watching someone’s face when they get out of their own way and do something they didn’t know they were capable of!”
Jim Tighe is an incredibly motivational and inspiring CrossFit coach. He always looks to bring out the best in everyone in his classes. We are very blessed to have Coach Jim in our community!

She loves the positive, uplifting, encouraging environment it brings. The personal challenge keeps her coming back for more!
In addition to CrossFit, Kristel loves to play softball. She has an entrepeneurial spirit and has been a key player in her husband’s business ventures. She lives on their family farm and enjoys creating healthy recipes and cooking for others.
